Understanding Insurance Deductibles

A health insurance deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket each year for eligible healthcare services before your insurance plan begins covering costs.

Here’s how it works:

  • You pay for services until you reach your plan’s deductible.
  • After the deductible is met, your insurance begins to share the costs usually through co pays or co insurance.
  • Preventive services (such as annual checkups) may sometimes be covered before the deductible, depending on your plan.

Example

If your plan has a $1,000 deductible:

You are responsible for paying the first $1,000 of eligible services each year. Once that amount is reached, your insurance will start paying its share of costs according to your plan’s rules.
